Now I'm sure all of you recognize this title as being the
Oakhurst milk slogan. Excuse me for pilfering it.
But what goes better together than a nice tall glass of milk and a Maine Whoopie Pie? Now I'm not talking about Ben and Jerry's Making Whoopie ice cream --though that's a helluva novel concept from two fat geniuses in VT-- what I'm talking about is good old fashioned Maine whoopie pies. For those of you from away, a whoopie pie, is basically what those of you from away call a mud pie. Or some of you just have no idea what it is. In either case, it's pure deliciousness.
HOWEVER, as a connoisseur of most things whoopie and all things chocolate, I must admit: it is rare to find the single whoopie pie that combines both perfect chocolate cake and creamy vanilla frosting. Often times the cake is too bland or too dry. Other times the frosting isn't that nice thick cream cheese type frosting but rather it's a quick whip of confectionery sugar. When push comes to shove I settle for the good cake and the sugary frosting. In fact, it's so rare that I find the perfect whoopie pie that the quest for said item is what keeps me eating these treats as much as anything--almost.
This week, before I launch off in search of Peruvian whoopie --and pies alike-- I'm spending some time DownEast; and the local
DownEast Deli in Prospect Harbor, ME (under new ownership) hasn't disappointed. Check out this delicious half-eaten cookie-brownie-like cake (a creative twist!) combined with the perfect cream cheese frosting!
Has perfection been encountered along the Maine coast? Perhaps it has... I'll just have to buy another one tomorrow for some more testin'. mmm
