Safe For Work: NBC Olympics "Boss" Button

From the makers of awesomeness like Hulu and Friday Night Lights comes the "Boss" button. Hit the jump to see what happens when you click it or go to the above video here and try for yourself.

Disclaimer: If you haven't already been avidly following the Olympics online, you'll probably have to download a plugin (takes about a minute).

Battle of the ultra cute: Voltron vs. Link

About one month ago, Link Girl hit the Reddit forums (fora?) and caused an unimaginable groundswell of cuteness and "awww!"s. Yesterday, she may have met her match. Voltron Girl, fresh, no doubt, from slaying a robeast with her adorably intimidating glare, showed up and drew immediate comparisons to Link Girl. Now there are two and, if the movie Highlander is to be believed (and it should be), there can be only one.

What do you think? Which cute-girl-in-80s-video-game/cartoon-costume meme reigns supreme?

Music and 

Well, the music industry and Apple reached a milestone today with iTunes announcing the sale of its 10 billionth song.

As a fanboy, this is obviously great news, but it also provides us with a little insight into tech savvy Americans' tastes and the status of music in our culture.
Check out iTunes best selling songs ever shown above.

MLR, how about a link from your JOTWs to iTunes for direct purchasing? This would be convenient and really boost iTunes' sales to a new high.

Kurupt feat. Joy Luv & J-Glaze - "All In Time"

Nothing fancy, just a girl with a nice voice, some horns in the background, and one of the OGs from the Death Row Records days. West Side!

Bonus: Speaking of OGs, here's Snoop Dogg feat. Kid Cudi - "That Tree"

Jam Of The (Last) Week: Rihanna - "Rude Boy"

Due to semi-unemployment, the JOTW and many of my other responsibilities have fallen to the wayside. As payment, I'm offering up back-to-back Jam Of The Weeks. Get some.

Kicking it off is Rihanna's MIA wannabee video above. I like the song but I especially like Caribbean hip undulation. The song is suggestive so if you are sensitive to phrases such as "Cmon rude boy rude boy, can you get it up? Cmon rude boy rude boy is you big enough?" then you should move straight to this week's Guilty Pleasure JOTW, skipping over the break and the other equally offensive runners up.

Meatballs Fit for an Olympian

Watching skiing, skating, bobsledding and luging in the Olympics really highlights the two most vital possessions of a winter Olympic athlete: the ability to confidently wear a spandex suit in front of millions of people and lots of courage. I mean obviously everyone knows the racers are bad asses; what normal person could confidently and coolly hurl themselves down a mountain at 90 miles per hour? But what has really caught my attention at these Vancouver games is the utter cojones of the men and women in pairs figure skating. First of all you’ve got this 100 lb woman willing to be thrown up into the air over hard cold ice by a dude wearing sequined spandex but then even more ballsy is her sequined partner who is facilitating the spins and twists of a woman with sharp metal blades on her feet rotating just inches from his sack. Now that takes guts!

So what dish can I salute these brave icemen and women with? My homemade chicken meatballs of course --- these are not only delicious but will keep you looking cut in a spandex suit!

AMDAL Graces Back Pages of Mass Media

The Dartmouth Alumni Magazine is a great publication -- see it in all its glory at its classy new website here.

Despite the worst website I've ever seen, DAM is hot on AMDAL's track. In the "Class Notes" section at the end of the Mar/April 2010 edition, Ms. Immesberger updates the alumni body:

MLR just finished a year in Hanover working at a startup biotech company and in January moved to San Francisco. AllMyDealsAreLive.com (AMDAL), the blog he founded in 2007 "as a way for all our Dartmouth friends to stay connected," recently received its 100,000th hit. Mike and Scos edit the site, which contributor  describes as featuring "a breadth of commentary on topics from politics, media, and sports, to technology, travel and food; all written up, of course, with a certain sense of sophisticated (and not so sophisticated humor." Other Dartmouth contributors include Block, WOHJR, Arod, RMC, CCL, The Bmar, Future, The Little Magician, Trip, Tastemaker and Rampage Jackson." [Check it out; it's gone viral!]

Of course, AMDAL isn't just a Dartmouth-centric site, and I think we're all better off because of that, but let us not forget our roots and our sense of history and tradition (insert $1 emoticon).

Friday Five

Although I really enjoyed growing up with two sisters and no brothers, one of the few unshakable side effects is my inability to hold back tears during Olympics human interest pieces. Thanks a lot, girls. For the next month, I have to pretend to use the bathroom after every other commercial break to avoid sobbing into my appletini.

After you turn twelve, “knock, knock” “who’s there” jokes tend to become “knock, knock” “you’re fucking kidding, right?” jokes.

Is it weird to hate tragedies, but love candlelight vigils? I hope not.

Success is achieved by filling a niche market that is otherwise untapped. That’s why I’m a self deprecating rapper. My first album, “No Money, Zero Sex Life, ’82 Volvo” hits record stores next month. Only buy it if you feel like it.

As a child, my favorite color was yellow, which also happens to be the color of participation ribbons.

Tiger's Back!

Not only will he be making a public appearance* tomorrow, but there is now "The Back 9" to the previous game involving his biddies.

And yes, the fist pump is just as satisfying in this game as the first one.

* It's to a hand selected audience- booo! Let the people ask questions!!!!

Gold Medal Spaghetti Squash for Vancouver

In honor of the 2010 winter games I am feeling the need to pay homage to our brethren to the north, Ooooooh Canada!

I was first exposed to Canadian culture at the age of 7 when my father took my excited brother and I to a WWF match in White Plains, NY. We were fortunate enough to view a cage match in which the Mountie (from Canada) gave a whoopin' to the Big Boss Man. I will never forget how his Canadian mountie baton emitted sparks when touching the cage walls thus shocking the Boss Man who was leaning against them. My next Canadian experience came in my French 1 class in the 9th grade when I learned about French-Canadian culture through the lens of "TeleFrancais," a zany French-Canadian teaching show featuring a dancing pineapple - "L'ananas son dances?" Finally in college I met some Canadians. They all played ice hockey, wore really wooly intarsia sweaters and said strange things like "When I was in grade 8" instead of "When I was in the 8th grade" and smoked a lot of pot. Thus my experiences have left me with a positive impression of Canadian culture.

But aside from a delicious breakfast on a trip to Montreal, I have not experienced Canadian cuisine. In researching the matter I have found many a hearty dish to keep those crazy Canucks warm. In looking up what is local and currently in season in British Columbia, I am drawn to the wonderfully delicious spaghetti squash. So in honor of the Vancouver games I’ll share with you my adaptation of this great recipe I found and made last week…

Valentines Breakfast photo follow Up + Chocolate Covered Bacon

The chocolate scone and scrambled eggs turned out pretttty good. I used the leftover chocolate to whip up a bit of chocolate covered bacon with a peanut butter swirl from this recipe. I know I know, but I couldn't help myself. I heated the chocolate in the microwave to make the recipe easier and subbed the white chocolate with peanut butter.
I'm not really a bacon eater but I was told it was reaaaaallly good!

If you’re struggling in a business school interview and the interviewer asks, “What was your biggest failure in life, and how did you bounce back?” I think you should take a chance and say, “This interview,” followed by “With that response?”

I don’t want to sound vain, but the reason I could never work in a department store is the exact same reason I could never work in a gym: too many mirrors. Wouldn’t get anything done.

I’ve found that the only thing more boring than doing laps in a pool is every book I’ve ever read.

I ordered from Domino's the other night and learned they have this new online feature, the Domino's Tracker, that monitors the status of your order. I thought it was a pretty cool idea at first, but then we got to Step Four: Quality Check. Suddenly, I imagined the preparer of my pizza, a guy named Mustafo, licking the sauce and putting his fingers in my cheese. Mustafo, you shouldn't put your fingers in my cheese.

I sometimes think about my very first girlfriend and how she had these gigantic braces, which made kissing unbelievably difficult. Fortunately, a couple months after we started dating, she finally got them taken off. And honestly, I thought her legs looked pretty normal.

Haters Unite

Are you a Brett Favre hater who feels sad, alone and like nobody out there is listening to what you have to say?

Probably not, because lets be serious... every red blooded man alive dislikes Favre for some reason or another and chooses to talk about how they'll freak out if he un-retires again at length in the presence of other men whenever possible.

However, if you want an organized outlet through which you can channel your Brett Favre rage, some friends of mine started a petition to keep him from getting coverage or something blah blah blah sports sports I only watch football for the social aspect... wait what was I talking about?

My interest in Favre is only as deep as the roots of his silver fox hair and the "Carve the Favre" Pats sweatshirt I had in 1996 , but if you're fascinated and want to learn more, check it out here: http://nobrettfavrecoverage.com/

Jam Of The Week: David Guetta ft. KiD CuDi - "Memories"

CuDi's had his latest album "Man On The Moon: End Of Day" out for less than 6 months and he's already pumping out quality videos. Yes, I know, David Guetta's name is on top on this one, but cmon, we all know who owns this song. Enjoy the video for the hot track, the naked (though obscured/covered) babes, and the awkward posturing of a white French DJ who probably has never been in a video before.

Google Buzzing. Twitter Fretting?

Just about a month ago, I editorialized on the Wpromote blog about Google's response to Yelp's refusal to be purchased by Google:

Hell hath no fury like Sergey and Larry [Google's founders] scorned. Keep in mind, all you innovators out there, that if Google offers to buy you out, what they are really saying is, “Don’t make us do what you do, only better!” Remember MapQuest? Yeah, neither do I.

Well, it looks like Twitter may be getting similar comeuppance. Google just announced Google Buzz and you can learn about it in the video above or in the TechCrunch article hot off the presses.

This move by Google is significant for a number of reasons:

  1. It's built into Gmail and tons of people already use Gmail.

  2. It's an outstanding parry to Facebook's decision to try their hand at email (which would compete directly with Gmail).

  3. If you have Facebook and Gmail, one could argue that Twitter may be on its way to irrelevancy.
Let's speak to #3 because it's a pretty bold statement. By the way, if you want to come off as a jerk, refer to your own statements as "bold." It's wicked-effective. Anyway, let's think about the things that people use Twitter for:
  1. Updating peers on what they're doing: Facebook and Buzz now have this covered.

  2. Sharing with peers things like pics, articles, memes, etc.: Facebook and Buzz now have this covered.

  3. Updating non-peers on the points above: Facebook and Buzz can have this covered (depending on privacy settings).

  4. Following peers and their activities: Facebook and Buzz now have this covered.

  5. Following non-peers such as celebrities, companies, etc. and their activities: Twitter alone has this covered.
One thing to remember is that just because someone else does something just as well or better than you doesn't necessarily make you irrelevant or obsolete. The problem for Twitter is that Facebook and Gmail have larger user bases and, very arguably, command more frequent interaction than Twitter. For example, I have to check my Gmail and my Facebook everyday because people attempt to contact me on both. With Twitter, I really only have to use it if I have something to share or if I have a huge following that I value that requires maintenance via frequent tweets to keep. For new adopters, Twitter may seem like a hassle; Facebook status updates and Buzz may seem like optional, additional features that I can choose to engage or ignore without abandoning the media entirely (i.e. Gmail and Facebook).

Sure, Twitter is still the best way to find out what Shaq is up to or what news stories are new on CNN. It's also the best way to shout into an abyss. By that I mean that I have a Twitter account, I tweet all the time, I even have alleged "followers" but the only people who might care about my tweets tend about to come from my Facebook account anyway. So, if you really want information on people that you don't know but are interested in, Twitter is still relevant. Also, if you're egotistical enough to think that people who don't know you would care about the things you do, think or care about, Twitter is still your best option. That doesn't make Twitter useless, however, it does throw a huge monkey wrench into their business model which is based on growth of unique users.

I'm not a doctor, so I'm not the kind of person to solemnly walk into Twitter's offices in San Francisco and say, "Twitter, I'm sorry but you only have six months to live." I don't plan to call Twitter's time of death anytime soon. All that I' saying is that Twitter cannot be happy about Google entering the social foray. Neither should Facebook be too thrilled but with Facebook's model, I think that they are more likely to be able to put up a better fight.

Remember these words, my friend, for a wise, handsome, talented, rugged man once said them: "Hell hath no fury like Sergey and Larry scorned."

Worst. Politician. Since. Palin.

In February 2010, the Democratic candidate for Illinois Lieutenant Governor decided to resign from the race. He decided to leave the race midstream because of some interesting allegations that came to light. Before leaving the race, he participated in one of the most bizarre television interviews ever. Drugs...sex...politics...crazy ex-wives...delusions... it makes John Edwards and Mark Sanford look like decent guys.

Valentine's Day Breakfast Special

I used to think that you needed to spend a lot of money or be somewhere exotic to really spoil yourself. Now, with work consuming my life for five days out of the week, it's clearly the simple things in life, the ones I never have time for, that are the biggest indulgence. This includes the simple act of sleeping in. After a long busy week I can think of nothing better than a Saturday morning with nothing to do. How amazing is it to sleep in on a weekend, wake up to eat a delicious breakfast and... *Now here comes the beautiful part*... get back into bed and go back to sleep! It’s even better than my next favorite morning maneuver which my brother’s friend has appropriately coined “the sweet baby Jesus”. This move is quite similar; You wake up in the morning, get out of bed, take a nice hot shower, THEN… you get back in bed and go back to sleep. All sweet and clean in your sheets. Priceless.

So this Valentines Day, ditch the expensive dinner out and the overpriced gifts and really treat your special lady or dude by starting their day off right with breakfast at home. They can eat this delicious meal in the comfort of their jammies and get right back into bed afterwards...

Stop Snitchin'

Full rundown on the new policy here. My initial reaction is that this will be a complete nightmare for the houses (EDIT: Except for Phi Delt-- heyo!), especially if HPo does indeed use Dartmouth students as undercovers. As a former social chair this terrifies me. In particular, under some readings of the "house party" rule social chairs might be looking at serious fines and jail time. The administration warned us to the possibility of the police and Hanover DA using this house party law against fraternities but stressed that it hadn't been tried before. On its face it would seem to apply to social officers, almost certainly to the person who went to Stinson's to pick up the Keystone.

Yet another reason to allow your hardworking officers to dine in style at the end of the year-- the potential legal liability alone makes becoming an officer very risky for little chance at reward.

Random Thoughts

To me, an easy way to tell if you’re performing well during sex is to look down and see whether your partner is still awake.

Instead of dressing your dog up with a little doggie jacket and some little doggie booties, why not just put it to sleep?

In literature, a preface is similar to a foreword in that I always skip both.

A friend of mine likes to describe my sense of humor as “irreverent.” I don’t think that’s true; I just try to make fun of stuff that most people take seriously.

One of the worst parts about giving up drinking for a while is the realization that no matter how hard you try, you’re probably going to fail. That’s one of the best parts, too.

Friday Five

I'm a pretty tidy person, but the desk in my cubicle is a huge mess; it's a bitch to clean up scratch-off ticket shavings.

I figure that if I smoke pot every day from here out there are only two possible outcomes. Either I will be unlucky and become a penniless deadbeat, or I’ll be lucky and become Demetri Martin.

Where are all the gentleman bugs?

If you use the term “market penetration” in a PowerPoint presentation, do me a favor and save it for the last slide. My capacity to suppress giggles has increased only nominally with age.

I’ve spent all week trying to like Radiohead. I’ve listened to every album, pored over articles that extol their novel sound, and grown accustomed to the reply “of course I like Radiohead;” but I can’t do it.
You don’t suck, Radiohead. I suck.

Stupid but fun

Random Thoughts

As you grow wiser with age, you begin to understand that in life, most things take longer than you expect. From projects at work to chores around the house, this holds true for virtually everything, except maybe sex – that seems to take just a couple minutes no matter what.

On W. 72nd street there’s a café called the Aroma Espresso Bar. Inside its lavatory hangs a sign, directly above the toilet, that reads: “Throw All Paper In The Trash.” I thought that was kinda funny, until I saw the trashcan in the corner, overflowing with soiled toilet paper.

I recently read that a Michigan-based company patented the SarcMark, a new symbol used to express sarcasm in writing. Fortunately, this indispensable product only costs $1.99 to download – an absolute bargain compared to the astronomical price of standard punctuation.

I wish people applying to business school realized that if you get a 700 or higher on the GMAT and someone asks you how the test went, instead of saying your actual score followed by ”but I’m taking them again,” you can just say, “I did well, thanks.”

Kids are so impressionable. Take my little nephew, for example. We were at the beach and we came upon a gigantic horseshoe crab that had washed ashore. He picked it up and asked, “Is this from outer space?” “No,” I responded, trying not to laugh. “That’s just a crab. You’re thinking of a jellyfish.”

Jam of the Week: Lil Wayne, Eminem & Drake - "Drop The World" & "Forever" @Grammy's

I don't care how big you get - if you have a multi-platinum-earning, playboy-banging, plane-crash survivor playing back-up drums while the highest grossing rapper and the guy who coined "bling bling" act as hype men, you've got to be pretty psyched. That's what Drake was dealing with. Oh, may I remind you that he's yet to put out a real album? Baller status, check.

Apparently the Grammy's bleeped the sh!+ out of this performance, so the clip above, while spliced with a few naughty words, is relatively harmless. Apparently the guy got trigger happy with the bleep button. Thankfully, the good people in Europe weren't as concerned.

Runners up after the jump...

Apple vs. Google: Fight!

Lots of nerdy tech news continuing this week. Apple and Google have had quite the history of late with Google CEO Eric Schmidt stepping down from the Apple board; Google entering the appPhone business with the Nexus One; and today's announcement of Apple's patented multi-touch technology (read: pinch-to-zoom) coming to the Nexus One and soon to Droid et al. Oh ya, Apple also released that iPad thang last week and Steve Jobs was rumored to say Google's Don't be evil mantra is "bullshit... They want to kill the iPhone and we won't let them." So even in sunny California where MLRs chillin' and casual mock turtlenecks, relaxed-fit jeans and Maine-made New Balances are the rule, a battles-a-brewin'.

In every breakup, you've got to choose sides. So given my illustrious history at Apple and my blatant Apple fanboy-ism (you really think Stephen Colbert got an iPad before I did?), here's what I'm going to do about this whole catastrophe:

Eliminate gOOg-lay (sounds lamer in French, no?) from my life*.

2. You may now email me at m*****@dartmouth.edu

5. You may now find me by following these MAPQUEST directions.

*My post frequency on this google-sponsored blog has already decreased dramatically (to the cheers of some!); it won't be hard to kiss it goodbye completely.

Game Day Grub: Hot Subs Two Ways

The last time I knew what was going on in professional football, Troy Aikman and Emmitt Smith were killing it for the cowboys and I was watching the Superbowl in Airwalks.

In terms of this coming Sunday, I know the following: the Manning brother that’s not from Hoboken is playing against Kim Kardashian's boyfriend and I should turn to Animal Planet at halftime for the most amazing puppy display I will ever witness.

My lack of knowledge does nothing to diminish my enthusiasm though... Football food is the best! The Superbowl is usually primetime to be a big fatty but this year I'm going to share some delicious dishes that only taste unhealthy. Here are two easy hot sandwich recipes that skip on the grease and are also delicious served without bread as a hearty entree...

Rachel Ray's Buffalo Sloppy Joe's
-Makes 4 big servings
Serve on a roll or baguette for an amazing sandwich or just in a bowl as a hearty stew.

-2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
-1 pound ground chicken or turkey breast
-1 carrot, peeled and chopped or grated
-2 stalks celery, chopped
-1 yellow onion, finely chopped
-2 to 3 cloves garlic, finely chopped or grated
-Salt and freshly ground black pepper
-2 tablespoons red wine vinegar
-2 tablespoons brown sugar (I used 1 tablespoon of a brown sugar/splenda blend)
-1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
-1/4 cup Frank's Red Hot sauce
-1 cup tomato sauce
-1 cup chicken broth
-Burger rolls, split and toasted (optional)

Directions
-Heat a large skillet with extra-virgin olive oil over medium-high heat.
-Add meat and break it up into little chunks with wooden spoon, cook 5 to 6 minutes.
-Add in carrots, celery, onions and garlic, season with salt and freshly ground black pepper, cook 7 to 8 minutes more.
-In a bowl combine the vinegar, sugar, Worcestershire, hot sauce, tomato sauce and stock. Pour into the pan and stir to combine.
-Simmer a few minutes more. Pile sloppy Buffalo filling onto buns and top with blue cheese or a little of the below ranch sauce.

Optional side sauce - cools down the spicy.
-1 cup fat free plain Greek yogurt
-1 half packet ranch dressing seasoning powder.
- Mix together and serve a little dollop on your Jo.

My Sausage and Peppers
-Serve on a roll or baguette for an amazing sandwich or just in a bowl as a hearty stew.

-4 sweet Italian turkey sausage
-1 large (28 ounce) can whole peeled tomatoes
-1 onion - chopped into thin slices
-2 red bell peppers – chopped into thin slices
-2 cloves garlic – chopped finely
-Italian seasoning
-1 bay leaf (located near seasonings)

-Put large pan over medium- high heat
-Spray with Pam
-Cook sausage for a few minutes until browner on all sides- take off and put on plate
- auté the onions, peppers and garlic for 10 mins sprinkle on some salt
-While veggies are cooking, cut the Sausages up into little bite size pieces
-Throw sausages back in pot and add canned tomatoes and juice
-Sprinkle 2 teaspoons salt, 1 tablespoon Italian seasoning and mix everything up
-Sauté for 20 minutes, taste and add more salt to taste.
